Public transit needs improvement

Dear Editor:

Senator and Mayor Brian P. Stack’s bill that would require a mental health background check for drivers for Uber and Lyft is a great step in the right direction to protect the segment of the public who are starting to use the newest additions to the sharing community programs. (Union City Reporter 10/12/14)

However, not everyone has the means to pay private transportation fees for traveling locally, even if there are very few options.

I wish our elected officials would view the public transportation system a bit more closely, as NJ Transit /Academy service between Union City and Hoboken almost does not exist. I have written and called NJ Transit with suggestions how to improve the service so many times and all I get is that I should keep complaining through their online system about it, which I do, but it gets me nowhere!

The route for the Bus 22 is much too long and with the bottleneck on Bergenline Avenue between 46th and 32nd streets (another sore eye in the face of Union City) the bus cannot keep a schedule. It also has very bad scheduling during non-rush hours and in the evenings after 7:30 p.m. and stops altogether much too early to enable even “before midnight” homecomings!

One may not like the jitney busses traveling to and from Manhattan and along Bergenline/New York Avenues, but it would improve the lives for commuters 1,000 percent if there could be such a service into Hoboken for dining and shopping and doctors’ visits /hospital etc.

I cannot understand why a 10 minute ride by car (there is the issue of parking in Hoboken) takes me up to (and sometimes more) 1 hour by public transportation.

Respectfully,

HR Leavy
