Popowski, Alsop spur Colts to win

Sitting in second place at (3-4), the Colts entered week six of their 2014 JCC of Bayonne Indoor Flag Football Jr. Division campaign needing a double header sweep to make a run at first place. Taking on the (2-4) Bears, the Colts had their hands full from start to finish. The Bears got on board first as Logan Page reeled in a 25 yard TD strike from Quarterback Matt Miceli. Down 6-0, the Colts used their ground attack to take a 16-6 lead as Talen Alsop and Roman Popowski each rang up TD runs and two point sprints. Staying with Miceli’s hot arm, the Bears made it 16-12 on a 30 yard scoring dart to Nicholas Resua. Mixing in some short tosses, the Colt’s offense set up two more scoring runs as Talen Alsop found paydirt again while Popowski slashed in for another two point run to put the Colts up 24-12. The Bears quickly responded with another Miceli to Resua TD pass but once again the Bears failed to tack on the point after try. Holding a slim 24-18 advantage, the Colts’ Christian Mekheil zipped a short toss to Alsop who raced wire to wire to make it 30-18, Colts. Trailing by 12 with just over three minutes remaining, the Bears running game took off as Chandler Owens bolted 35 yards for a TD to cut the Colts’ lead to 30-24. After a 10 yard dash by fullback Raunak Verma, the Colts finally iced the victory on a pitch to Roman Popowski who galloped in for his second TD giving his squad a hard fought 36-24 victory.
