Still in search of their first victory, the (0-3) Colts took on the (1-1) Bears with hopes of gaining some ground in the JCC of Bayonne’s Indoor Flag Football Jr. Division. For the Colts’, team captain Talen Alsop sparked the offense ringing up 14 points with two TD runs and a two point scamper. Not to be outdone, the Bears’ Chandler Owens matched the Colts output with two TD gallops and a two point sweep. Knotted at 14 all, the Bears’ Matt Miceli turned a wheel route into a wire to wire TD rumble putting the Bears up 20-14. Just as quickly, the Colts countered with a Roman Popowski goal to goal TD run followed by Talen Alsop’s two point dash as the Colts took a slim 22-20 advantage. Forcing the Bears’ offense to go three and out, the Colts’ offense went to work as Popowski once again barreled goal to goal to stretch the Colts’ lead to 28-20. With Raunak Verma, Roman Popowski, and Talen Alsop fueling the defense, the Colts’ offense got another scoring opportunity and they cashed in as Popowski hit paydirt for a third time as Popowski’s long TD voyage made it 34-20, Colts. Needing a break to swing the tide, the Bears’ defense stepped up as Nazar Kolesnyk, Logan Page, and Matt Miceli notch a two point safety by trapping the Colts’ runner in the endzone. Down 34-22, the Bears’ Matt Miceli torched the court for a 26 yard TD jaunt cutting the Colts’ lead to 34-28 with 1:21 remaining. With the Bears clawing at their backs, the Colts put the ball back in the hands of Roman Popowski who answered the call with his fourth goal to goal TD run stretching the Colts’ lead to 40-28. Nearing their first victory, the Colts had to hold on until the final whistle as the Bears’ Matt Miceli raced full court for a TD and a two point plunge pulling his squad closer at 40-36. Things got even wilder when the Bears’ defense added a second safety to make it a 40-38 bout but as time ran out the Colts escaped with a hard fought 40-38 win.
