Young UC man to lose leg after hit-and-run in NB; fund set up for help

Michael VirueMichael Viruet, 20, and his brother Adrian, 11, had just left the Columbia Park movie theater in North Bergen on Friday night, Nov. 14 when they were struck by a red Nissan Rogue that jumped the curb. Both brothers were severely injured, with the younger brother thrown and impaled on a fence. Their sister, Mileen Viruet, 15, was with them at the time and narrowly escaped being hit by the vehicle, which then sped off, according to various media reports today.
Michael was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he underwent surgery on Sunday to amputate his right leg, according to a GoFundMe website set up by his older brother, Chris Bonilla. Adrian underwent brain surgery at the Hackensack Medical Center for Pediatric Surgery.
Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver of the red Nissan Rogue. The incident occurred at about 9:50 p.m. on Friday on Kennedy Boulevard between 31st and 32nd Streets. The vehicle has heavy damage to the passenger side in the front and is missing part of the passenger side fender and headlight, which were left at the scene. Also missing is the passenger side mirror. The vehicle was last seen near 21st Street and Kennedy Boulevard in North Bergen. Police are analyzing the pieces of the car and surveillance camera footage. Anyone who saw the accident or has knowledge pertaining to it is urged to call the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office at (201) 915-1300.
