Tape measure falls 50 stories and kills man in Jersey City

JERSEY CITY — A man delivering gypsum board to a construction site at Christopher Columbus Drive was struck in the head by a 1-pound tape measure and died.

Jersey City police found the man lying on the ground in front of the construction site after he was struck by a measuring tape that had fallen from the 50 th floor of the building.

He had stopped his vehicle and stuck his head out the window to talk to someone when he was struck by the falling tape measure, said the police report. He immediately fell to the ground. He was no wearing a hard hat, according to the police.

He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center at about 10 a.m. where he was treated for his head injury. The police report said the victim also suffered cardiac arrest while being treated.
