Longtime city servant Brigid Breivogel, dies
Brigid Marie Conaghan Breivogel, a retired Bayonne health director and community activist, died on Oct. 1.
Breivogel was retired. She had been employed with the city of Bayonne as health officer and health director. She had also worked for Bayonne Hospital. A registered nurse, Breivogel was a licensed social worker.
She received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in health education at then-Jersey City State College. Breivogel was also an adjunct professor at the college.
Breivogel served on the boards of the Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation, the Hudson Perinatal Consortium, the Advisory Council of the Bayonne Visiting Nurse Association, and the Bayonne Housing Authority, and was the BHA’s first female commissioner.
Breivogel had also been a member of the New Jersey Health Officers Association and the American Public Health Association.
She is survived by her husband John Breivogel, daughter Janine Breivogel-Videtto and Janine’s husband Paul.
Students can apply for Elks Lodge scholarships
Scholarships for high school students from Bayonne are now available through the Bayonne Elks Lodge 434.
The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2015 competition. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need.
“Most Valuable Student” applications must be submitted to the Bayonne Elks Lodge 434, 364 Broadway, by Dec. 5, 2014. Scholarship Awards for winners range from $4,000 to $50,000.
Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply. Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks.
There is also a “legacy” scholarship available to children and grandchildren of Elks members in good standing. Contact the Bayonne Elks for further information regarding the legacy scholarship.
Other guidelines are: college students are not eligible to apply; applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed (permanent legal resident status does not qualify), and male and female students compete separately.

BHS Class of ‘79 35th anniversary reunion cancelled

Bayonne: Water Colors Art Show seeking entrants
Deb Peveler and Lou Segura of Beautify Bayonne invite artists of all media to participate in the exhibit “Bayonne: Water Colors” at the Bayonne Museum on Saturday, Oct. 25, from noon until 8 p.m.
Artists can submit oil paintings, watercolors, acrylics, sculpture, mixed media, photography, glasswork, quilts, etc., but each exhibit should include at least one piece of the bodies of water that comprise Bayonne’s coastline: Newark Bay, New York Bay, or the Kill Van Kull.
Peveler encourages everyone who has a passion for the arts and promoting the beauty of the Peninsula City to participate.
“Bayonne has a great story to tell through the arts,” Peveler said.

St. Andrew’s church hosting lecture by media executive
Judith Valente, a Bayonne native who is a PBS-TV correspondent, will speak Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at St. Andrew Parish in Bayonne, 4th Street and Broadway.
Her presentation will be “Contemplation in the Age of Twitter. “Valente will focus on how people with busy schedules can utilize listening to learn “the art of pausing.”
Valente’s presentation is free. A book signing will follow the event.
