JERSEY CITY — Nine months into the calendar year, the Jersey City Council voted to approve its $515 million calendar year budget by a 7 to 2 vote. Councilmen Richard Boggiano and Michael Yun voted against the budget.
While the budget reduces Jersey City taxes by 2.17 percent, taxpayers will see only a four tenths percent reduction when county and school takes are taken into account.
The budget was late partly because the city administration tried to include a takeover of the previously autonomous Parking Authority, but got bogged down for months as the state reviewed the process.
The savings would also have been greater if not for increased costs in several departments, something Councilwoman Candice Osborne was extremely critical about, saying some departments overspent without council approval.
Yun said the recreation department over spent its approved budget by 21 percent.
