Dear Editor:
With the recent record-setting rain events throughout the northeast, I was reminded of the problems Hoboken has experienced with flooding over the years. The same week parts of New Jersey and New York were soaked with up to a foot of rain in one evening, Governor Christie approved several billion dollars’ worth of flood-resistance and water system loans to cities including Hoboken.
I couldn’t be more relieved that Hoboken is finally making progress on the years-old plan to install four flood pumps. While this will only be part of the solution to Hoboken’s flooding woes, it’s integral to moving water out of our streets. I must also point out that, without important changes made to the Environmental Infrastructure Trust enacted through legislation that I introduced, Hoboken’s flood pumps might still be stalled for lack of funds. As the city moves forward, slowly but surely, with flood mitigation strategies, I am proud to say that I had at least some part in clearing a path for this progress to occur.
Respectfully,
