Gallo steps down from BMUA
Stephen Gallo, executive director of the Bayonne Municipal Utilities Authority, resigned at the BMUA board meeting in the City Council Chambers, on Monday, Sept. 8.
Gallo’s resignation was effective immediately. He was replaced by Timothy Boyle, who took over the post on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
Bayonne man wins Macy’s shopping spree
Bayonne resident Brian Slattery has won a $2,000 shopping spree at Macy’s flagship store in New York City, courtesy of CaesarsCasino.com.
As part of his prize, Slattery will be chauffeured from home to Macy’s Herald Square in a limousine on Friday, Sept. 12, where he will be met by a personal shopper to assist him for the day.

Charity softball game to be held
Bragging rights will be won during a benefit softball game on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. at Gorman Field, when the Peninsula Masonic Lodge team faces off against the Bayonne Fire Department squad.
This year, funds raised will assist Taylor Redondo, a developmentally disabled youth.

23rd Annual Edgewater Arts & Music Festival to be held
The Edgewater Arts Council will hold its Edgewater Arts & Music Festival, at the intersection of Old River Road and Thompson Lane, on Sunday, Sept. 14.
The free celebration of the arts runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
More than 60 artists from the tri-state area will compete for prizes in the categories of Art, Photography, Crafts, Fiber Arts, Mixed Media, and Student.
A $1,000 “Best of Show” award is donated by the Edgewater Borough Council.
Free parking and shuttle buses will run all day from Edgewater Commons to the festival.
Support for the Arts Council comes from Borough of Edgewater grants. Additional funding comes from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the Department of State, through grant funds administered by the Bergen County Department of Parks, Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs.

Equine scholarship offered to high school-age students
The New Jersey Equine Advisory Board is offering a $1,000 scholarship to help 4-H and FFA members pursue their equine activities.
Members of organizations represented on the New Jersey Equine Advisory Board also are eligible. Applicants must be New Jersey residents between the ages of 13 and 16.
The Sara Dubinin Scholarship, in memory of a young horse aficionado, will be presented at the New Jersey Bred Equine Breeder Awards Luncheon on Jan. 25.
Dubinin, a Sayreville resident, was attending Middlesex County College when she succumbed to injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident in 2007.
Those interested in receiving the scholarship must submit an application form, including an essay on, “How horses have affected my life and how horses figure into my future.”

‘Getting to know New Jersey Black Bears’ to be presented
Become “beary” smart at the “Getting to know New Jersey Black Bears” program presented by the Manalapan-based Bear Education and Resource Program (B.E.A.R.) on Sunday, Sept. 14, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Meadowlands Environment Center, 2 DeKorte Park Plaza, Lyndhurst.
This program for all ages will include information about the nature of black bears.
“The B.E.A.R. program’s mission is to educate residents about black bears, reduce unwarranted fears and promote tolerance of bear neighbors,” said spokesman Brian Aberback. “Participants will learn easy ways to lessen the chance of having bears frequent residential neighborhoods. Live bears will not be part of the program.”
The cost is $5 per person for the public and $4 for MEC members.

Legal clinic for Hudson residents on Superstorm Sandy
Hudson County residents having legal issues stemming from Superstorm Sandy may be eligible to receive free legal counsel from attorneys from Northeast New Jersey Legal Services, a nonprofit organization.
A clinic will be held on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Northeast New Jersey Legal Services, 574 Summit Ave., 2nd floor, Jersey City.
The organization handles cases including FEMA appeals, contractor fraud, insurance denials, and home repair.

Adoption and pet wellness clinic event at park
The Liberty Humane Society is inviting the public to its adoption and pet wellness clinic on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 16th Street/DiDomenico Park’s lower level.
Activities will include a low-cost pet wellness clinic, with vaccines and microchipping onsite, and a dog wash. Also offered will be the “Name Your Price Pet Adoption Promotion.”
