Port Authority asks court to dismiss JC $400M lawsuit
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey filed a motion in federal court last week to dismiss a suit brought against it by the Jersey City. Earlier this year, Jersey City filed suit claiming the Port Authority owes the city as much as $400 million in unpaid property taxes, a claim the Port Authority disputes.
The motion also asks that the city pay for the Port Authority’s legal expenses in its defense of the suit.
Mayor Steven Fulop ordered the lawsuit after he unsuccessfully pushed to get the Port Authority to pay up on taxes for a variety of properties.
“We generally don’t comment on litigation but in this case all we can say is that we look forward to seeing the Port Authority in court on behalf of the residents of Jersey City, who the Port Authority has been taking advantage of for decades,” Fulop said.
Barclay’s Tickets for Charity will benefit Santiago family
A combined effort by the Jersey City Police Detective’s Benevolent Association (JCPDBA) and Barkley’s Golf Tournament would help to benefit the family of Police Det. Melvin Santiago, who was murdered last month.
Through a program called Tickets Fore Charity program, 100 percent from the sales of tickets for this year’s Barclays Golf Tournament done through the program goes to local charities. In 2013, when the event was held in Jersey City, this fund raised more than $750,000 for more than 100 charities.
The program is designed to positively impact communities where the PGA tournaments are being held. Although the tour will be held in Paramus this year, the JCPDBA will be selling tickets right to the deadline at midnight on Aug. 17.
The Barclays will hold its first event on Aug. 19 to 24, at the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus.
There are two types of tickets available through the program: a weekly grounds ticket for $125, or a good-any-one-day grounds ticket for $65. Tickets can be purchased through the website www.buytfc.com.
The JCPDBA’s ongoing fundraising effort is two-fold. First, funds raised will ensure benefits for its Fallen Officer’s Fund, which will continue to be in place for all active members. Second, as part of their commitment to the community, they will continue to support organizations that benefit the children of Jersey City. These organizations include Jersey City Public Schools, Special Olympics, and Toys for Tots, and others.
KRE towers to break ground in fall
A proposed $666 million, three-tower residential development near Journal Square will officially break ground in the fall, said Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop.
“We want steel to be in the ground when we do it,” Fulop said this week.
The development will be located near Summit and Pavonia Avenues and will include a 54-story tower with 540 units; a 70-story tower with 700 units; and a 60-story tower with 600 units. The developer is KRE Group.
Ten Jersey City High School students take part in mural art program
The Jersey City Mural Arts Program (JCMAP) has for the first time enrolled 10 high-school fine arts students as paid apprentices through the Jersey City Summer Works (JCSW) program.
The ten youths will work alongside four seasoned artists over the course of eight weeks throughout the summer in creating four different public art displays, while also contributing to Jersey City’s lively arts and cultural community. The Summer Works Arts Program allows for local high-school students between the age of 16 and 18 to receive arts training, enrichment, and a financial stipend.
“This collaboration between artists and Jersey City’s youth highlights the different ways we can encourage youth to serve their city and the unique potential our arts community has,” said Mayor Steven Fulop. “Investing in our youth and community go hand in hand, so we’ve ensured that this program not only provides jobs, but also tells the story of Jersey City in an engaging and creative way.”
