Dear Editor:
Regarding Edward Friedman’s letter in the Reporter about bicycle riding on the sidewalk in Hoboken, I have to wholeheartedly disagree with him.
Although Hoboken would like to think of itself as a bicycle friendly city, its streets are simply not wide enough for bicycles and cars to share the road. It is also extremely dangerous that all the bike lanes have been marked right next to parked cars. At any moment someone can open a car door and “door” a biker causing serious injury or even death. You will notice that in New York City the main bike lanes on the north and south running avenues are never placed next to rows of parked cars. When I ride my bicycle on the sidewalk – I would never ride in the street for fear of my safety – I always plan my route using the widest sidewalks and least busy streets and I always yield to pedestrians. The next time you see a biker on the sidewalk this is why. Riding in the street is just too dangerous!
