Man shot after allegedly attacking cops with fence posts

JERSEY CITY — A 25-year-old Jersey City man was struck by police bullets after he allegedly attempted to attack police early on Tuesday morning near Ege Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive.
According to a preliminary investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s office, at about 2:30 a.m. the man, carrying two fence posts with sharpened edge, allegedly attacked an emergency services vehicle after the officers pulled up beside him and told him to drop the posts.
At that point, according to Assistant Prosecutor Gene Rubino, the male allegedly attacked the emergency services truck with the sharpened fence post and then threw it through the passenger side window, striking one of the police officers in the head.
“That officer sustained a head injury,” said Rubino in a press release.
The male then climbed onto the running board and reached into passenger side through the window and allegedly grabbed the barrel of one of the officer’s rifle in an attempt to disarm the officer and pull the firearm out of the window.
“The officer and actor then struggled for the firearm, which resulted in the officer discharging his firearm into the interior passenger side door,” Rubino said. “It is believed the rounds went through the door and struck the male. The male then fell off the running board and both officers exited their vehicle ordering the male to the ground, however he did not comply and remained standing.”
The male then pulled up his shirt with one hand and hid his other hand in his waistband. The male allegedly ignored the officers’ commands to show his hands and one of the officers discharged his firearm, striking the male.
“The male was then placed into custody and transported to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment,” Rubino said. “The male will be going into surgery and his injuries are described as non-life threatening. The two Jersey City Police Officers are also being treated. The investigation is on-going and being conducted by the Prosecutor’s Office homicide unit, which is standard protocol whenever there is a police involved shooting.”
