BAYONNE – An emergency blood drive will be held on Tuesday, July 15, from 3 to 7 p.m., at the City Hall Fire House, at 27th Street and Avenue C, city officials announced.
The drive is sponsored by the Bayonne Fire and Police departments, and is taking place to respond to the critically low blood supply, according to city spokesman Joe Ryan.
“Area blood banks are short of all blood types, so all types are welcome in this drive,” Ryan said. “The Blood Center of New Jersey reminds Bayonne residents that someone needs blood every two seconds.”
Any adult who is physically able is welcome to donate blood. Prospective donors who are 16 or 17 years old may donate blood, if they can produce completed parental consent forms that are available from the Blood Center of New Jersey.
Prospective first-time donors are asked to bring a signed or photo identification and to know their Social Security number.
Those who have donated blood before must provide signed identification.
In order to prevent donors from being weak after giving blood, drive organizers are asking them to eat a meal and drink plenty of water one hour beforehand. Water will be available at the drive site.
Health professionals will screen prospective donors before blood is drawn. There will be a free cholesterol check for all donors.
Those who have recently traveled outside the United States, or those with any other eligibility questions, may call the Blood Center of New Jersey at (973) 676-4700, ext. 132 or 198, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
