Music, food, and fireworks on July 2
The exciting island party band Alotta Colada will be performing at 4 p.m. on July 2 at the town pool. The event is free to town residents and their guests. Rides, food and refreshments will be available. Fireworks will take place after dark. See the fireworks story inside the newspaper for other celebrations.
Mayor endorses Tom DeGise for County Executive
Mayor Gonnelli on Thursday endorsed Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise in his re-election bid. Gonnelli is the sixth Hudson County mayor to publicly support the county executive’s campaign.
“Our County Executive Tom DeGise is always there when we need him, and has never forgotten Secaucus,” said Gonnelli. “He has been instrumental in getting some of our roads paved, facilities improved and helping to secure Community Development Block Grants for Secaucus. Tom doesn’t care about votes, he cares about people.”
Said DeGise, “My job as County Executive is to work with all the mayors to help them solve the unique problems each individual community faces. I have developed a strong personal and professional relationship with Mayor Gonnelli and am proud of some of the great things we have accomplished together for Secaucus.”
The event was held at The Elms senior citizen building, where a $180,000 grant award was announced to improve facilities for its residents. Also present were Councilwoman Susan Pirro, Councilman Robert Costantino, Secaucus Housing Authority Executive Director Christopher Marra, and several Secaucus Housing Authority commissioners.
Library to host Residents’ Art Display in July
The Secaucus Public Library and Business Resource Center is hosting a Residents’ Art Display during the entire month of July. Secaucus residents ages 18 and older are invited to display their art and photographs in the Panasonic Room, according to library director Jenifer May. A reception for the artists displaying their work is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23.
Previous Resident Art Displays have included hand-made dolls, quilts, ceramics, pottery and other art forms.
“Sometimes people think of art as only paintings, but art is expressed in many forms,” said May. “Photography is another very popular art form. Many people knit or embroider beautiful items that are also truly art. I urge residents to take a second look at their skills that they take for granted and consider that, perhaps, others may recognize the finished work as art.”
Individuals participating in the event must limit their submissions to three pieces per artist. For very large art objects, contact May directly.
This year the library will be holding a “Student Art Month” for the entire month of December, to include the art work of all students from pre-school age through 12th grade.
To register for the Residents’ Art Display, call (201) 330-2083 to indicate the type of art being submitted and whether it requires being placed on a table, being displayed on an easel, or mounted on the wall. Items may be brought to the library beginning Tuesday, July 1. The library will be closed on Friday, July 4 through Sunday, July 6, in honor of Independence Day. Artists should arrange to have their entries taken home by Aug. 1.
Register now for High School Girls Basketball Camp
The Secaucus High School 2014 Girls Basketball Camp for 3rd to 8th graders will run from July 7 to 10 at the Secaucus Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to noon.
This is a girls’ camp to teach fundamental skills of basketball, proper attitude, focus on defense, and motivation. The camp is dedicated to teaching man defense, man press, fast break, passing game, self help drills and the mental/emotional part of the game.
John Sterling, head coach of the Secaucus Girls Varsity team, with a record of 158-37 in seven years at Secaucus and a career record of 447-137 overall will direct the Secaucus Basketball Camp. Coach Sterling has been selected “Coach of the Year” 16 times in his 22 year career. He has led his teams to 14 League Championships and four State Sectional titles.

Vendors invited to participate in library mini-fair/book sale
The Friends of the Secaucus Public Library’s 17th annual mini-fair/used book sale will take place on the library grounds on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held Sunday, Sept. 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
It’s not too early for those planning to attend to mark their calendars and save the date, according to Friends of the Library president Zinnia Miller. “It’s particularly important for vendors who plan to participate in the mini-fair to secure their spot because space in the library’s parking lot is limited and vendors will be approved on a first-come, first served basis,” she said.
The cost for table space up to 8 feet is $25. Space for a larger table space is $45. Vendors must supply their own tables and chairs. As an alternative, there are a limited number of tables and chairs available at the library for a rental fee of $10. There is also limited access to electricity on the library grounds but accommodations for that must be approved well in advance. All arrangements for a table, tent, or any other special accommodations must be approved by the library director and reservations must be paid no later than Friday, Sept. 12.
Vendor service contract forms are available at the front desk in the library.
