Total team effort earns Penguins “gold”

With a packed house on hand, the (7-1) Penguins and the (5-4) Devils took to the court in hopes of claiming this year’s JCC of Bayonne Sr. Division Floor Hockey top honors by clinching the “Gold Medal.” Just as they had done throughout the season, the Penguins roared out of the gate to take a 3-0 advantage with Marek Mickiewicz (1 goal, 1 assist), CeeJay Larino (1 goal, 1 assist), Mackenzie Woods (1 goal) and Julian Giron (1 assist) leading the charge. The Penguins’ league leading defense did seem mortal for just one moment as Jake Nowak sent a 30 foot sky rocket to net to make it 3-1. For the rest of the bout the Penguins ruled the offensive zone as goals by Colin Woods (2) and Julian Giron (1) lifted the Pens out to a 6-1 lead. With their backs to the wall, the Devils fought for every inch and pounded 12 shots on net in the final 10 minutes with Megan Feeley, Alejandro Cifuentes, Ryan Giocoli, Jan Patrick Egan, Elliott Santana, and Jake Nowak each coming within inches of the scoring. With victory well in hand, the Penguins reinforced their defense ranks with Josh Geenbaum and CeeJay Larino playing bodyguard roles for James Bajor who faced the Devils’ fiery last gasp. While the final moments didn’t effect the outcome, the Devils’ Matt Doyle went out like a champ with three amazing saves. In the end, the Penguins prevailed with a 6-1 victory and the “Gold” while the Devils earned “Silver” to cap off a great season of hockey.
