I had a great laugh in Hoboken the other day when I saw posters for this month’s Hudson Theatre Ensemble stage adaptation of “The Little Engine That Could,” the classic children’s story of the little train that overachieves by repeating the mantra, “I think I can, I think I can.”
Ironically, New Jersey is “served” by NJ Transit and PATH, two little engines that have proved time and again that they cannot.
Regular riders know NJT’s mantra: “We apologize for any inconvenience.” And PATH’s mantras include, “Because of a power outage …,” “Because of a track problem …,” “Because of a signal failure …,” “Because of a police matter …,” etc.
Maybe the board members at NJ Transit and PATH should read “The Little Engine That Could.”
