To the Editor:
As most citizens of Bayonne know at this point, the Peninsula War is over. Mayor Elect Davis and his council candidates will officially take the reins on July 1. I have to say that I, for one am glad that it is all over as well as most citizens of Bayonne. There will be no more door knocking, phone calls, literature, or commercials. It was indeed a grueling battle but as Mayor Elect Davis said, “the healing process starts tomorrow.”
What we all have witnessed over the last couple of months should actually be thought of as as a great movement. The people of Bayonne came out and played their role in society. That role is to freely and fully participate in the election process. Hundreds, if not thousands, of new voters also signed up to be participants. No longer will Bayonne be governed by those who may have the larger bank account or political connections. The citizens of Bayonne truly made their collective voices heard, and I am sure that this is not the end.
I think of this as a great new beginning for Bayonne. In the coming months, I am sure to see more people at council meetings and more people wanting to get involved. We the people have a right to have an equal say in the legislative process. The people of Bayonne stood up and they voted with their conscience. I am proud to say that I played a part.
As I have always said, the people of Bayonne are strong, unique, and resilient; they will never give up. We all came together and voted for change and it will be a tough battle and a true challenge ahead. I am confident, though, that positive changes are on the horizon with input from the community and the new management coming to city hall.
We all have to continue to make even the smallest contribution to our town, our government, our society as a whole. Let’s work together as fellow Bayonnians to make Bayonne the brightest, cleanest, most prosperous city in Hudson County. Bayonne is worth fighting for as we all saw on June 10. Don’t give up just because the election has ended. Get on board and join me on this journey to a great Bayonne.
