Pancake breakfast is Sunday
The Weehawken VFW Oulton-Kraft Post 1923 will hold its first annual pancake breakfast on Sunday, June 8 at the Post located at 309 Park Ave.
It will be an all-you-can-eat breakfast of pancakes, sausage links, coffee, tea and juice. The cost is $7 per person. Children 4 years old and under are free.
Proceeds benefit VFW Community Programs and Veteran Services.

Free computer classes at Weehawken Library this summer
Get connected with free computer classes at the Weehawken Free Public Library this summer. A series of hands-on classes is being offered in June so participants can learn new skills or enhance their existing computer skills.
“These classes provide for hands-on training for residents navigating our networked, electronic world,” said Mayor Richard Turner. “The classes will help participants gain confidence as they use computers at the library, at home, or even when looking for a job.”
Classes will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. in the second floor computer area at the Library. Any Weehawken resident is welcome; registration is required as seating is limited to 12 participants per class.
Classes are Friday, June 13, Introduction to Basic Computer and Internet Search Techniques; Friday, June 20, Introduction to e mail, and Friday June 27: Introduction to Microsoft Word.

Girl Scout recruitment and registration
On Saturday, June 14 the Weehawken Girl Scouts will hold a recruitment and registration day at the Weehawken Library Community Room from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Present members of the troop will conduct information sessions and slide shows on all levels of girl scouting. Girls entering kindergarten through high school can join Girl Scouts. Woman’s Club honors four
Monday evening, June 9, the Woman’s Club of Weehawken will honor four of its longest serving members: Frances Jones, Ruth Elsasser, Marie Alberian and Lillian Martinelli.
These four women have a combined membership to the New Jersey Federation of Women’s Clubs, Weehawken Chapter, of over 200 years. They were instrumental in preserving the Palisades from commercial encroachment, especially in Weehawken, which has the strictest zoning laws of all the waterfront communities. Officers will also be inducted.

Check out ‘Union City: Unleashed’
The photo exhibit “Union City, Unleashed” by Glen Davis opened Friday, June 6 at 7 p.m. at the William V. Musto Cultural Center, 420-15th St. in Union City. Admission is free.
Glen Davis has been a professional photographer for 38 years. He was Malcolm Forbes’ personal photographer, traveling around the world with him on various adventures until Forbes’ death in 1990. Davis continued on as the Forbes family photographer, shooting Steve Forbes’ two presidential campaigns, as well as shooting thousands of assignments for Forbes magazine as its only in-house photographer, a job he enjoys to this day, 27 years after his first motorcycle ride with Malcolm Forbes.
Glen Davis is a relatively new resident of Union City. Every morning he and his dog Miami go out early and walk for two to five miles, canvassing the streets of Union City and appreciating the wonderful character of the city, exemplified by its diverse Hispanic population. Of particular interest to Glen are the colors and textures he sees smattered throughout the community. This exhibit allows viewers to experience the beauty Glen sees through his camera’s lens when he and Miami walk Union City’s streets.
The exhibit will run for about two months. The facility is open Monday through Thursdays 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fridays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and sometimes for evening events.
Hudson County Patriotic Home Contest is now on
The third annual Hudson County Patriotic Home Contest invites you to run the grand old flag up the pole, dust off the Statue of Liberty, get George and Abe on the porch, put some stars in your windows, and place the Liberty Bell on the lawn. It’s time to show off your pride in America.
Tweet three photos of your decorated home and address to JCHudsonmedia or e-mail them to jctalking2000@yahoo.com. Three grand prize winners will each receive $500 cash.
All photos must be received by June 27. Be creative. Last year more than 50 homes were entered in the contest.
Palisades Medical Center offers community health screenings
Throughout the year, Palisades Medical Center’s staff partners with North Hudson Community Action Corporation, Christ Hospital School of Nursing, and Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern NJ to provide free health screenings and education programs. Palisades Medical Center’s community outreach and education programs are generously funded in part by TD Charitable Foundation.
Free screenings and information will be provided along on blood pressure, heart rate, percentage of oxygen in the blood, hearing tests, mammography, and valuations for charity care.
Free health screenings will be held at the following locations in West New York:
June 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 pm at Nazareth Baptist Church, 5800 Palisades Ave.
June 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Trinity Reformed Church, corner of Palisades Ave. and 60th St.

Governor names Hoboken labor leader to PA Board of Commissioners
Gov. Chris Christie has named George Laufenberg of Hoboken, administrative manager of New Jersey Benefits for the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, to fill a vacancy on the Port Authority board of commissioners left by the resignation of Anthony Sartor in April, according to a report on NJ.com.
Christie has also formally named John J. Degnan, a former New Jersey attorney general, to head the bi-state agency’s 12-seat board of commissioners in the wake of the resignation of David Samson amid investigations by state and federal prosecutors into possible conflicts of interest involving his law firm, Wolff and Samson. The firm represented clients with Port Authority-related business. Those investigations grew out of the broadening probe into politically motivated lane closings on the George Washington Bridge in September.

State bar foundation sponsoring free seminar on wills and estate planning
As a public service, the New Jersey State Bar Foundation presents a free public seminar on wills and estate planning on Thursday, June 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the New Jersey Law Center, One Constitution Square off Ryders Lane in New Brunswick.
Topics of discussion examine estate-planning basics, including wills, elder law planning, Medicaid eligibility and guardianships. A question-and-answer period follows the presentations.
Guest speakers are Crystal West Edwards, Esq., and Farah N. Ansari, Esq., attorneys with the Florham Park law firm of Schenck, Price, Smith & King, LLP.

Palisades Medical Center honored with quality achievement award for stroke care
Palisades Medical Center (PMC) received the “Get with the Guidelines–Stroke” Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for the treatment of stroke patients.
Get with the Guidelines–Stroke helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Palisades Medical Center earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include aggressive use of medications and risk-reduction therapies aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.
Get with the Guidelines–Stroke also helps PMC staff implement prevention measures, which include educating stroke patients to manage their risk factors and to be aware of warning signs for stroke, and ensuring they take their medications properly.
