BAYONNE – City and plant firefighters contained an approximate 6,000-gallon fuel spill at the International Matex Tank Terminal site after an accident during a transfer of the product, a fire official said. There were no reported injuries.
The Bayonne Fire Department responded to IMTT on Monday, June 2 at 8:56 p.m., according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
Arriving firefighters were told that the gasoline had spilled over the top of a 93-foot diameter tank at the facility.
“The overspill was confined to the tank dike, and firefighters from Bayonne and IMTT produced a layer of specialized foam over the spill to contain the vapors,” Rogers said in a statement.
The fuel storage tank was reportedly engaged in a product transfer at the time of the incident. The Hudson Regional Health Commission responded to the scene, and a remediation company also responded for the cleanup, according to Rogers
IMTT is investigating the incident, and the Department of Environmental Protection was notified.
