UNION CITY – The City of Union City, Mayor Brian Stack, and the board of commissioners will hold a dedication ceremony for “Embroidery Plaza” on Friday, May 30 at 6 p.m. on New York Avenue between 30th and 31st Street in recognition of the many persons that worked in Union City in the flourishing embroidery industry. For many years Union City was widely known as the “embroidery capital of the world.”
The mayor and commissioners will be present, as well as City Historian Gerard Karabin and Assistant Historian Jane Pedler. Classic cars will be on display, and several sculptures constructed from dismantled embroidery machinery will be unveiled. Following the ceremony there will be a performance by members of West Hudson Opera featuring John Jay Hebert, tenor; Iris Karlin, soprano; and David Maiullo on piano.
One of the sculptures being unveiled is “The Embroidery Tree,” which was originally displayed at the “First Lady Luncheon” at the Pierre Hotel in NYC. It was designed by Amy Cheung with Henry and Adam Garcia of Marco Designs LLC, and painted by Aldo Sanchez “Zar.” The sculptures are graciously being donated by the artists.
Everyone in the community is invited to attend. Admission is free.
