Over the rainbow

To the Editor:
Parting with a beloved pet is difficult.  We’ve enjoyed loyal and fun friendships with two rescued dogs for the last dozen years: Xena, a female lab, and Buddy, a mischievous, playful male wirehaired fox terrier.  Unfortunately, the time comes when the pet’s caretakers must decide to make a final call.

Our vets from Bayonne Vet Med on Broadway and 11th Street, Drs. Paul, Lisa, and Mammas, the staff: Lisa, Dorothy, Freddie, Steven, and Alena kept these near dozen-year-old pooches in good condition.

Some time before Easter, we noticed Xena acting differently, she was on meds, but we had this gut feeling about her future, especially in view of her age and behavior.

She started having trouble with stairs, her once keen senses were gone. She whimpered.  Well, all things bad, then a fall, but the trooper carried on.  Sadly, we knew it was time.

Dr. Paul, as we have come to know this compassionate veterinarian, and assistant Steven, responded within the hour for us.  Xena was euthanized with dignity.  We believe Xena peacefully made her journey, will not be forgotten, nor will she forget us. Dr. Paul and Steven stayed awhile as we mourned, and kept a watchful eye on us as well.

A few days later, a lovely sympathy card arrived, and later, the ashes, notes, cards, and a clear box having Xena’s paw print with provision for a photograph.

Our other dog Buddy is not quite himself these days since Xena’s passing.  We will try to cheer him up somehow with a few new toys.  To Bayonne Vet Med, we sincerely thank you for your kindness and compassion.
