Lincoln Tunnel “helix” to see lane closures at night

WEEHAWKEN – The westbound (to New Jersey) lanes of Route 495 outside the Lincoln Tunnel, known as the “helix,” will be closed at night beginning April 22 and running through December 2014.
Westbound traffic will be diverted onto the eastbound lanes, while eastbound traffic will be detoured onto local streets.
The planned closure schedule for westbound lanes is as follows:
• Sunday through Thursday, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning
• Friday night/Saturday morning 12:01 a.m. to 8 a.m.
• Saturday night/Sunday morning 1 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Eastbound traffic will exit at the Pleasant Avenue off-ramp and access the tunnel via JFK Boulevard East, beginning one hour before the westbound closings on weeknights, and a half hour earlier on weekends.
According to the Port Authority website, “There may be some traffic on local streets in the town of Weehawken due to the diversion from the helix overpass. We will do everything possible to reduce traffic by encouraging motorists to use alternate routes.
“In addition, in order to perform certain types of repair work, access to the underside of the helix above local streets will continue to be required. Single lane closures on local streets in one or both directions will periodically occur during off-peak daytime and overnight hours. One lane in each direction will be maintained while the work is being performed and all lanes will be reopened during non-working hours.”
