BAYONNE BRIEFS

Parking meter, pay station enforcement to return on Wednesday, March 5

The Bayonne Parking Utility announced that it will resume enforcement of parking meters and pay stations on Wednesday, March 5.

Beginning March 5, it will be necessary for those who have parked their vehicles to deposit coins into the on-street parking meters, and to purchase parking at the pay stations in municipal parking lots.

Bridge raising focus of meeting

More than 20 people attended the Wednesday, Feb. 26, meeting at St. Andrew’s School to discuss the Bayonne Bridge raising program and the concerns about the process.
Mayoral candidate James Davis led the discussion, which addressed area residents’ concerns about noise, vibrations, debris, and street closures related to the work.
Some attendees complained that issues they raised were not being addressed.
“My house vibrates and there’s construction noise every time they drill a pylon,” said Ray Francis of 4th Street and Avenue A.
Bob Herrick of 4th Street said workers were spraying with hoses to knock dust off the bridge, with the resulting sediment running down onto his property.
Others at the meeting said they were concerned about how the bridge work would affect the property values of their homes.

Steel workers endorse Smith team in race

The Mark Smith for Mayor Campaign has been endorsed by the United Steel Workers union, which locally represents workers at the International Matex Tank Terminals.
“The steel workers believe you share our core values of family, jobs, (and) community, and will support the issues of importance to labor and all working men throughout the state of New Jersey,” said USW District 4 Director John Shinn in offering the endorsement.
“In his words and in his deeds, Mayor Smith has a proven pro-labor track record,” said Local 4-406 President Cary Krand. “We are pleased to back his reelection.”
Smith expressed his gratitude for both the local and international unions’ support.
“Here in Bayonne, we support organized labor,” he said. “Many of our families are union households and I am proud to support organized labor as an important voice in the public discourse.”
