In Hoboken, already partying at 9 a.m. on Saturday for ‘Leprecon’

HOBOKEN – It may be quite a day in Hoboken. Just because the Hoboken St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been suspended for a third time this year, doesn’t mean the city’s young people — and many, many of their friends — won’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day early. In fact, they were already seen heading to house parties Saturday, March 1 at 9 a.m. and have a choice of two “Lepre-Con” pub crawls to participate in later (see aerial photo taken around 10 a.m. on Saturday).
The traditional St. Patrick’s Parade was canceled after 2011 because Mayor Dawn Zimmer wanted to move it to a weekday night to cut down on the revelry. The independent Hoboken St. Patrick’s Day Committee said holding it on a weeknight was too difficult.
The parade was always held the first Saturday in March so that the city could get the best bands and wouldn’t have to compete with other locales. Over the last ten years, more and more young people flocked to the young, hip city that day to party with their friends.
While the parade has been canceled, observers have suggested holding it on a Sunday as a compromise, to no avail. So entrepreneurial young people have filled the demand.
