Funeral mass took place Jan. 17 at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Jersey City, for Zygmund (Ziggy) J. Kowalski. He passed away Jan. 13 with his family by his side. He was born in Jersey City, son of the late Teofila and Stanley Kowalski. Ziggy was a veteran of U.S. Army’s 9th Infantry Division in World War II, discharged as a staff sergeant. He was the recipient of many medals, but was especially proud of his Bronze Star. He was predeceased by his four sisters: Helen Bednarski, Loretta Domanski, Anna Norton and Eugenia McColgan, and two nephews. He is survived by three nieces and three nephews, along with his immediate family. Ziggy was the husband of 45 years of Anna (Ann) (nee Chrzaszcz), father of Eugenia Roman, Mary Sutera and her husband Anthony, and Melanie Kowalski; grandfather of Katherine Roman and Olivia Sutera.

He spent his entire life thanking the Mother of God for his safe return from the war, “without a scratch.” The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Sameh Elias and the staff of Compassionate Care Home Hospice, especially Jonelle and Joyce.Services arranged by the Bromirski Funeral Home, Jersey City, with visitation at Greenville Memorial Home, Jersey City.
