HOBOKEN – The city of Hoboken released information for residents after the National Weather Service declared Thursday evening’s expected snowstorm to contain “near blizzard conditions,” including 6 to 8 inches of snow, wind gusts of 35 miles per hour, and wind chills of minus-15 degrees.
For residents who do not have heat or are worried about their ability to stay warm, the city planned to open a warming center in the Wallace School, located at 1100 Willow Ave., at 4 p.m. on Thursday until Friday afternoon.
According to an announcement, the parking utility will enforce its blizzard guidelines. Vehicles parked along designated emergency snow routes will be ticketed and towed when streets are snow-covered. A list and map of emergency snow routes is available at www.hobokennj.org/snow
Street sweeping rules were not enforced on Thursday, but meters and other regulations remain in effect. Parking rates in two city garages, Garage B (located on Second Street between Hudson and River Streets) and Garage D (215 Hudson St.), will be reduced to $5 per day for residents with valid permits. Residents with disabilities who possess either a handicapped license plate or hang tag for their permitted vehicle may use the Midtown garage (371 Fourth St.) for the same reduced rate.
Property owners or occupants are responsible for clearing sidewalks of snow within six hours of the completion of a storm, and residents are urged to assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing snow from their properties. It is illegal to shovel snow back onto streets or onto fire hydrants. Fines will be issued for dumping snow on fire hydrants.
