Hoboken school district to hold lottery for school choice applicants

HOBOKEN – The Hoboken Public School District will conduct a lottery drawing on Wednesday to determine which students, out of a pool of 91, will be allowed to attend one of the city’s five public schools, according to an announcement on the district’s website.
The lottery will determine which children can participate in the Interdistrict Public School Choice program, which allows students from neighboring municipalities to receive education in districts other than their own, without paying. According to the announcement, the number of applications received for the 2014-2015 school year greatly exceeded the number of spaces authorized by the state Dept. of Education.
The lottery will take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the second floor conference room at the AJ Demerest School, 158 Fourth St.
The lottery is open to the general public, but attendance is not required to be included in the lottery. Any applications that were received by the Dec. 2 deadline will be included in the lottery. The district will mail the results of the lottery to applicants on Dec. 20. – Dean DeChiaro
