Jersey Cares holds its 18th Annual Coat Drive
From now through February 7, 2014, Jersey Cares plans to collect and distribute more than 60,000 “gently used” winter coats to men, women, and children in need throughout New Jersey.
This year, The Jersey Cares Coat Drive is proud to partner with The 2014 NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee, Wal-Mart, and New York Cares to create The Super Community Coat Drive, the largest Coat Drive ever held in the tri-state area—and likely the largest Coat Drive in history.
In Hudson County, there are four places where you are able to donate coats throughout the Jersey Cares Coat Drive:
Elysian Cafe, 1001 Washington Street, Hoboken. Coats accepted Mon. through Fri., noon – 10 p.m.; Sat and Sun, 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. For more information, call (201) 798-5898.

Over the past 17 years, Jersey Cares has collected, sorted, and distributed more than 400,000 coats to New Jersey. If you are a nonprofit agency or school, you can request gently used, warm winter coats for your clientele or students. Dog park for county park
At its November meeting, The Hudson County Freeholders approved $163,000 for the construction of a dog park in Stephen Greg County Park in Bayonne. While the park has a variety of features, from early childhood playgrounds, ball fields and basketball courts to a track, fishing pier, and bocce courts, the park lacked a dog run, something local residents have complained about for years.
The dog run will be near the park’s maintenance building and will feature soft-surface material. Other features, including a water fountain and prep area, are included in the price tag. The dog park is expected to be open before spring 2014, officials said.
CarePoint purchase of Christ Hospital upheld
A federal court ruled this week in favor of CarePoint, a for-profit company that owns Bayonne Medical Center and Hoboken University Medical Center, in a lawsuit that tried to block the purchase of Christ Hospital in Jersey City.
Prime Healthcare Services, a California firm, had offered to purchase the hospital before it went bankrupt, but withdrew its offer after significant community and union protest. CarePoint purchased the hospital afterwards for less than Prime originally offered. The suit claimed CarePoint had worked behind the scenes to promote the protests.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Morris Stern, who oversaw the sale of all three hospitals in the last five years, said Prime is not entitled to damages. Prime, according to published sources, said it would appeal the decision.
