WEEHAWKEN — On Thursday, a painting by famed artist Edward Hopper, “East Wind Over Weehawken,” went on the auction block at Christie’s as part of a lot of paintings. The auction house expected to fetch at least $22 million. The painting is owned by the Pennsylvanjia Academy of the Fine Arts, which hopes to use the proceeds to acquire more contemporary art. But the very day it went up for auction, the lot of paintings sold for $40.5 million after competitive bids.
The painting features a row of homes on the corner of 49th Street and Blvd. East.
Meanwhile, Weehawken resident Susie Felber, a mom and comedian, took the opportunity to have a friend paint a modern version that will sell to raise money for the Weehawken Parent Teacher Participation Association.
The bidding for Steven Gardner’s version started at $500 on eBay in late November. If the auction runs out, it will be posted again.
Gardner titled his 2013 version “East Wind Over Weehawken” as well. Felber said that if the painting sells for a few thousand dollars, it will be a steal.
