Hudson County Democrats united in support of Dream Act
Assembly Speaker-elect and Hudson County Democratic Chairman Vincent Prieto (D-32) is announcing the complete support of Hudson County mayors, state legislators and Democratic leaders for the New Jersey Dream Act. The legislation, which is pending in both the State Senate and the Assembly, would provide children of undocumented immigrants with the same right to in-state tuition at state colleges and universities as other young adults. Assemblyman Prieto is a sponsor of the bill and has been advocating for its passage for several months.
“Our state should be doing everything it can to encourage young people to attend college and become successful members of society,” said Assemblyman Prieto. “Many of these men and women came here at a young age and they deserve the same opportunity for a college education that anyone else has. America is a nation of immigrants and New Jersey is one of the most diverse places in our county. We must celebrate that diversity and provide young people with the opportunities they need to succeed. I have discussed this issue with our mayors, legislative delegation and the County Executive and Hudson County is completely united in supporting this vital legislation.”
The Assembly version of the bill passed in the Budget Committee in June. The Office of Legislative Services determined that the bill would have no impact on the state budget because tuition revenues are not part of state budgeted expenditures.
“As an educator I have seen these children grow up in our communities right alongside their friends and peers who were born here. They are no different and should be given the same chance at an affordable college education,” said State Senator and North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco (D-32). “I support this legislation and hope to see it become law as soon as possible.”
