The UBS Atrium Series presents the New Jersey debut of INFLAME: Indo-Flamenco World Fusion Music
The UBS Atrium Series kicks off its indoor lunchtime series with a free concert by the Indo-Flamenco group Inflame on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 12:30 pm at the UBS Atrium at 1000 Harbor Boulevard in Weehawken.
Inflame uses classical Indian and traditional Flamenco forms as a launching pad for adventurous improvisation. Seamlessly navigating these two musical forms, they take audiences on an exciting journey with rapid-fire guitar and mandolin runs, and layered percussive grooves in a variety of time signatures. The concert will feature the north Indian classical mandolin virtuoso Snehasish Mozumder, flamenco guitarist Cristian Puig, Ranendra Das on tabla and Peter Bogdanos on flamenco and world percussion. The group will perform music from their just released self-titled CD, recently debuted at New York City’s La Nacional.
Hailing from India, Bangladesh, Argentina and the United States, the group first performed in a one-off show at the Hispanic Society of America Museum in New York City in 2005. The musicians had no idea that they would spend the next seven years gradually understanding each other’s musical background, squeezing in time between busy touring schedules, eventually writing material that conveys the depth and creativity of these four masterful musicians.
This concert is a rare opportunity to hear this fresh and inspiring music.

Library explores Palisades
In 1524, explorer Giovanni da Verrazano described the cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River as “a fence of stakes,” or Palisades.
Join author and photographer Kevin Woyce as the Weehawken Library hosts another of his unique “illustrated tours.” Woyce’s dynamic visual presentation will take place at the Weehawken Nutrition Center, 201 Highwood Avenue, on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. He had previously visited the Library this past summer for presentations on the Jersey Shore Lighthouses.

Social service group seeking help to end homelessness
The Garden State Episcopal CDC is seeking the public’s help for its “Longest Night Campaign: Ending Homelessness, One Life at a Time.”
“We will launch this season of giving on Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. at Casino in the Park in Jersey City,” said Executive Director Carol Mori.
“This event will kick off one month of raising awareness on the plight of homelessness, raising funds to end this crisis and collecting much-needed supplies, all culminating in our annual Homeless Memorial Service, which will be held during the week of Dec. 21, 2013 – the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, and the national homeless memorial.”
Garden State Episcopal CDC provides social services and housing for people touched by homelessness and loss. For the Homeless Memorial Service, the group is collecting food and clothing donations to be distributed to people who are displaced or homeless.

Child advocate group holding informational session on Nov. 12
Are you interested in helping children in the foster care system? If so, Hudson County CASA (court appointed special advocate) is recruiting volunteers to advance the best interests of abused and neglected children.
An informational session, addressing the program and the role of its volunteers, will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 400 of the Hudson County Administration Building, 595 Newark Ave., Jersey City.
CASA works through trained community volunteers to ensure that needed services and assistance are made available to children while helping to move them toward safe and permanent homes. Its volunteers speak for children in court, serve as fact finders for judges, and safeguard children’s interests while they are in the foster care system.
Hudson County has nearly 700 children in foster care; most have been removed from their homes for abuse or neglect.

Freeholders laud High Tech High for Jersey CAN Award
The Hudson County Board of Freeholders recently recognized High Tech High School for receiving the Jersey CAN Award for Academic Excellence for 2013. It was one of just a few schools in the state to be honored.
High Tech is located in North Bergen, but accepts students who apply from all of Hudson County.
“Jersey CAN’s Top 10 schools detail the performance of every public school and district in the state,” a spokesman said. High Tech received the honor based on its success in the categories of Low-Income Student Performance, Latino Student Performance, and Overall Student Performance.
“The Hudson County Board of Freeholders commends the students, staff, and faculty members for their hard work in attaining this prestigious award,” said Freeholder Chairman Anthony Romano.
“Here in New Jersey, we are proud to host some of the best schools in the country,” said Janellen Duffy, Jersey CAN executive director.
