Dear Editor:
It has been my great privilege to serve on the Hoboken Board of Education since 2009. I am proud of the accomplishments of the Board during these years, and I am honored to have played a role in moving the district forward.
I have served on the Governance, Finance, Curriculum and the Athletic & Performing Arts Committees and helped to realize a variety of educational initiatives and capital improvements. I was most excited about casting my vote to hire our Superintendent, Dr. Mark Toback. With the support of the Board, he initiated his successful plan to increase student achievement, increase parent involvement and modernize the district in so many ways: from the business office, to the physical buildings, to classroom technology and materials and parent/community communication.
Growing up in Hoboken, I attended the same schools my children now attend. I am proud that now, finally, all the schools are being treated equally, each having the same access to new textbooks, Smartboards, staff support and capital improvements.
As a Wallace and Hoboken High School parent, I also sit on both those PTOs as well as the HHS Student Based Youth Center Community Liaison Board. I am also a long time member of a Hoboken moms Internet group (as Ivanso) and enjoy posting about community and school issues.
One issue particularly close to my heart is celebrating our students’ successes. The district is blessed with a wonderful, diverse student population for whom we offer a wide range of educational programs to fit their many levels and interests. I enjoy all the student victories whether in the classroom, on the field, in the theater or in the lab. Students thrive when they know the community supports them.
The way to keep moving forward is with a strong plan, strong support and focused resources. To that end, I ask you to support Leon Gold, Jennifer Evans and myself so that we can work together with the superintendent to support his clear mission of student success and high expectations.
Public service is truly a privilege and requires dedication, commitment and respectful cooperation. I believe Leon, Jennifer and I have shown that we will honor this commitment to the community and will always put the kids first in everything we do. I ask that you allow us to continue moving the district forward by voting 3-5-8 for Board of Education on November 5.
Sincerely,
Irene Korman Sobolov
Hoboken School Board Member
