Getting the back of the hand

Dear Editor:
I was unable to attend a recent meeting in Union City in reference to a proposal in our community to designate a portion of Mountain Road as blighted and in need of redevelopment.
Over the past several years the current mayor suffering from severe shortsightedness and obvious miscalculations have resulted in a large number of buildings along the southern border of our community in the general vicinity of Summit Ave. and Fifth Street being razed.
Also its been quite sometime that 6 houses in the area of Sixteenth St. and Kerrigan Ave. were demolished. I like to point out that the Gilmore School at that site was opened in 1898 and when I graduated from the 8th grade there in 1971 it had already been designated as a fire trap.
If there is to be any serious redevelopment in Union City in order to create badly needed local property tax ratable being elected these 2 sites should be given top priority. Obviously in either case not one family or business should have to be relocated.
This ill conceived proposal to redevelop Mountain Road and fail to correct serious blunders of the not so distant past shows evidence of class warfare in Union City where neighborhoods which border Weehawken receive more attention along with better NJ TRANSIT bus service at the expense of neighborhoods which border North Bergen including mine, seem to get the back of the hand along with inferior NJ TRANSIT bus service especially from the Port Authority.
