Four-year-old boy bit in face by pit bull
A four-year-old boy was bitten when he attempted to break up a dispute between two pit bulls on Aug. 12, according to a police spokesperson.
A resident of West 19th Street, the boy attempted to stop two pet pit bulls while his mother was putting an infant to bed inside at about 9:15 p.m.
The boy was bitten on the right side of his face by one of the two dogs, neither of which was registered with the city. The boy was transported to Jersey City Medical Center and treated for lacerations.
The city health department is following up on the unregistered dogs.
Boy charged in theft from auto
On Aug. 14, a 17-year-old Jersey City boy was charged with burglary of an auto and theft from an incident that allegedly occurred at 1:54 a.m.
Det. Captain Walter Rogers said that police responded to the area of 51st Street and Avenue B on a report of “young males breaking into vehicles.” A patrol car toured the area, and the officers reported seeing four males congregating near 54th and Avenue B. Two fled north toward Jersey City, and two remained on the corner.
The 17-year-old had $20.71 in U.S currency and 1.50 in Euros he allegedly took from a parked vehicle.
In connection with the same incident, 21-year-old Bilah Brookins, a Jersey City man, was apprehended for unpaid violations to the Union City Municipal Court and later released on a summons.
Cocaine possession charged
Tyrone Baskin, 43, of Bayonne was charged with possession of cocaine on Aug. 13. He was arrested by the police narcotics unit at about 12:21 p.m. near 19th Street and Kennedy Boulevard.
As part of an ongoing investigation, the narcotics unit went to that area, spotted Baskin, stepped out of their car, and confronted him. The police spokesperson said Baskin allegedly attempted to throw a clear plastic bag of suspected cocaine on the sidewalk—which the detectives retrieved.
Alleged drug deal leads to arrest
Richard Esposito, 59, and Timothy Orfanieds, 45, both of Bayonne, were charged after an alleged sale of drugs on Aug. 12.
Esposito was charged with possession of Xanax, possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana, alleged distribution of a controlled dangerous substance (Oxycodone), and distribution within 500 feet of a park.
Narcotics officers pulled Esposito’s car over for a broken rear light and arrested Esposito after he allegedly sold drugs to Orfanieds.
Detectives then searched Esposito’s house and allegedly found additional drugs.
Traffic dispute leads to arrest for impersonating a police officer
Paul Salayeik, 58, of Bayonne, was charged with impersonating a police officer on Aug. 12.
Salayeik allegedly pulled out onto Avenue C near 43rd Street in a 2007 Chevy Impala, cutting in front of an off-duty police sergeant traveling south.
According to the police report, the sergeant beeped the horn and had to pull into the fast lane to avoid hitting Salayeik’s car. When stopped at the traffic light at 39th Street, Salayeik allegedly rolled down his car window and asked what the off-duty police officer’s problem was.
The sergeant said, “You cut me off,” at which point Salayeik, according to the report, allegedly said, “I’m an off duty cop. I’ll F—you up.”
The sergeant, as quoted in the report, said, “Really?” He then contacted the police dispatcher requesting a police unit. Salayeik then drove on, turned off Avenue C, and again onto Broadway. He stopped the car in traffic to allegedly confront the off-duty sergeant who had followed him.
At this point, the sergeant identified himself, displayed his identification, and told Salayeik he was under arrest, according to the report.
