A funeral mass was offered Aug. 2 at St. John Nepomucene Church, Guttenberg, for Irene E. Custer, 82, of North Bergen. She passed away on July 28 in Jersey City. Born in Jersey City, she was predeceased by her parents, James A. and Mabel Duffy; her husband, John S. Custer; and her elder brother James Duffy. She served for over 30 years as a teacher of English, Social Studies and Religion at St. John Nepomucene School, Guttenberg, Immaculate Heart of Mary School, North Bergen, St. Anne’s School, Fairlawn, and for most of her career at St. Augustine’s School in Union City. She was a communicant of St. John Nepomucene R.C. Church, Guttenberg and a past president of its English Rosary Society. She is survived by her son, the Rev. Dr. John S. Custer of Westbury and Smithtown N.Y., her brother Robert (Lucille) Duffy, ten nieces and nephews, and hundreds of former students whose achievements in life were a constant source of pride to her.
