JERSEY CITY – There has been another homicide in Jersey City, the latest in a rash of shootings and gun-related deaths this month. One account put the total at six murders in July.
That’s almost half the number that took place during all of 2012 (a total of 13 that year).
The latest homicide took place overnight, according to NJ.com. Kareem Porter, 21, was killed around 3:40 a.m. on Orient Avenue near Kennedy Blvd, the news source said.
Police said the investigation is open and would not release further details.
Gene Rubino, spokesman for the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, was in a meeting this afternoon and was unavailable for comment.
In previous murders this month:
An 18-year-old was shot and killed after he chased down two alleged thieves who had stolen a cell phone from his brother. An 18-year old suspect has been arrested and charged with felony murder in connection with this incident.
Several days later, a partially paralyzed, wheelchair-bound man was shot and killed on Ocean Avenue.
Another man was stabbed to death during that same weekend.
In addition to these homicides, there have been several other shootings that did not lead to fatalities. The most recent shooting took place late Saturday night at the corner of Corbin Avenue and Pavonia Avenue in the Journal Square section of the city. In that incident, a man was shot by two alleged assailants who have not been arrested.
