JERSEY CITY – Monday afternoon, while in the Office of the City Clerk, the Reporter noticed that all the lights were out in the office – ceiling lights, desk lights – with not a bulb was illuminated. When asked the reason, one employee answered succinctly: “Conservation.”
At first we thought this might be a new city initiative to save money. But city spokeswoman
Jennifer Morrill responded with the following comment on behalf of Mayor Steven Fulop: “The city sustained massive damage in Hurricane Sandy that the previous administration never repaired nor submitted to [the Federal Emergency Management Agency]. As soon as it was brought to our attention, we started the process of rectifying the electrical issues at City Hall, as it would be a fire hazard not to do so. As a result, for the next few days, City Hall is being powered by a generator. Employees were notified of the generator and we appreciate that city employees are working together to get the regular power repaired as quickly as possible and conserving energy in the meantime.”
