Motown, rock ‘n’ roll, Latin, or doo wop, you pick it. Whatever musical taste you have, there is a chance it will be played at the Town of Guttenberg 2013 Summer Concerts series. All concerts begin at 7 p.m., and are held between 70th and 71st streets on Boulevard East.
“We like to give back to the town,” said Capt. Joel Magenheimer of the Guttenberg Police Department, who organizes the shows for Mayor Gerald Drasheff and the Town Council. “We like to have something going on for the summer months.”
“It’s just a nice night for everybody.” – Capt. Joel Magenheimer
____________
“We’ve been very successful with these concerts,” Magenheimer said. “We’ve never had a time that we didn’t have a crowd there.”
Scenic overlook
The picturesque concert venue of Boulevard East, overlooking the New York City skyline, probably does not hurt attendance either.
“Let’s put it this way, the groups always bring it up when they’re out there,” Magenheimer said. “They’re always saying it’s a great view from here.”
City officials are urging people to come and have a good time.
“It’s a great evening out. You can bring your own lounge chair if you like,” Magenheimer said. “It’s usually over by 9 p.m. It’s just a nice night for everybody.”
The groups
The concerts and dates are:
“Time Machine” on Thurs., July 18 – described as one of the most well known and most sought after bands in the Tri-State area.
“With so many all-star performers, their show is like listening to a human jukebox,” said Magenheimer. “[They’re] constantly changing styles and vocalist during the course of the concert; you will be awestruck all night long.”
“Smooth” on Thurs., Aug. 8 – is listed as a “complete Motown revue.”
“This exciting and talented band will take you through a fascinating recreation of the sounds of the Temptations, the Four Tops, and many more,” said Magenheimer. “You will be entertained throughout the show.”
“Rene D’Leon on Sat., Aug. 24 – If Latin music is what you really pine for, this is the concert to attend. All but one song is sung in Spanish. The lone English tunes performed in his two years in Guttenberg have been Frank Sinatra ditties; “New York, New York” and “Chicago.” “We have a beautiful show, with dancers,” D’Leon said, beckoning residents to attend.
“The Bronx Wanderers” on Tues., Aug. 27 – “This show echoes the era of the past, while breathing new life into the sounds of today,” said Magenheimer.
The Wanderers play crowd favorites “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Run Around Sue,” “The Wanderer,” and more.
“They are the ultimate tribute to Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, the ‘Jersey Boys,’ ”
Magenheimer said. “This group is a major crowd pleaser.”
