JERSEY CITY – In an effort to curb drunk driving and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, Mayor Steven Fulop has announced that this weekend the Jersey City Police Department will set up checkpoints in undisclosed locations throughout the city.
In recent months several pedestrians and bike cyclists have boon hit by motorists, at least three of whom fled the scene of the incident, prompting questions about whether these individuals were drinking.
According to Fulop’s office, police officers will this weekend evaluate drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment at certain points in roadways. Police officers will target drivers who may be impaired by looking for reckless driving, speeding, aggressive driving, cell phone use, and motorists without seatbelts. Police officers will use radar to detect motorists who are speeding and exhibiting other aggressive driving behaviors on city streets.
The checkpoint initiative will be funded through a New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety Drunk Driving Enforcement grant.
