With the JCC of Bayonne’s Sr. Division Floor Hockey “Championship Tournament” just one week away, the (6-0) Penguins took on the re-energized (1-6) Islanders. After a six game losing streak, the Isles are still reveling over their 4-3 comeback win over the second place Devils. Looking to put one more notch in their regular season handle, the Islanders knew it would take a titanic effort to defeat the Penguins who boast the league’s best offense, best defense and whose roster includes the league’s top three scorers. Things seemed to be falling into place for the Penguins as they took a one goal lead with the “Twin Engines” Jan Patrick Egan and Jake Nowak teaming up for Nowak’s 17th goal of the season. But the script got a rewrite when James Bajor and Gabriella Bonilla made it 2-1 Islanders by blasting two goals off assists from Madison Neal Markowski and Meghann Mock. It took a while, but the Penguins fought back to tie the fray at 2-2 as Alisa Verzosa worked a pass to Malachi Smith who zipped a shot to net. The momentum stayed with the Penguins as Smith assisted Alisa Verzosa on her fourth goal of the season to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead. Just before the halfway point, the Islanders stormed out to a 4-3 advantage as Bajor darted two pinpoint passes to Gabriella Bonilla who drilled in two fireballs. The seesaw donnybrook went on as the Penguins’ Malachi Smith once again tied the bout at 4 all but the deadlock was short lived as the Isles’ Bajor to Bonilla combo clicked again to give the Islanders a 5-4 advantage. As the pressure mounted on both goalies, the Penguins’ Matt Doyle and the Islanders’ Elliott Santana each endured a boat load of shots on net. A brief respite came about when the Penguins’ Josh Verzosa and John Bautista manned the defensive ranks just long enough to regroup. Rested, the Penguins’ Malachi Smith once again raced into action to retie the game at 5-5 with his third goal of the bout. The relentless Islanders kept plugging away and with 1:30 remaining Natallyah Teixeira made it 6-5 Isles with a wrist shot masterpiece. With the final seconds zipping away, the Penguins’ Jake Nowak railed in the last goal of regulation to send the 6-6 game into overtime. With all players at the ready, the Islanders put that notch in their handle as Gabriella Bonilla drilled in the game winner to knock off the undefeated Penguins 7-6.
