Smith super as Penguins soar

With both teams at (1-0), the Penguins and Devils took to the court for an early season showdown in the Jewish Community Center of Bayonne’s Floor Hockey’s Sr. Division. The game started out true to form with the Penguins’ Malachi Smith scoring off an assist from Jan Patrick Egan followed by the Devils’ Jared Radil assisting Colin Woods on a game-tying wrist shot. The rest of the game, however, belonged to the Penguins’ dominating speed and lockdown defense. Tied at 1 all, the Penguins’ Malachi Smith zipped a backhanded shot to net making it 2-1, Penguins. Once again, Jan Patrick Egan registered the assist followed by two more assists to Jake Nowak as the “Twin Engines” helped the Penguins build a 4-1 lead. With their offense landlocked, the Devils did get a spark from their rookie playmaker Melanie Bonilla who put four shots on net but the Penguins’ Matt Doyle pounced on every attempt. As the game went on, the Penguins kept 95 percent of the action in the Devils’ zone as Josh Verzosa, John Bautista, and Alisa Verzosa took turns protecting the point. As the pressure mounted, the Penguins pumped in two more goals as Malachi Smith assisted Josh Verzosa on his first two goals of the season making it 6-1, Penguins. Down by 5 goals with just ten minutes to play, the Devils’ Josh Greenbaum gave up his goaltending duties so his squad could generate some offense and the move nearly worked as team captain Mackenzie Woods, Drew Radil, and Colin Woods gave the Penguins’ defense a run for their money. The Devils scoring exploration finally fell way to the Penguins speed as Malachi Smith raced the ball up court before sailing a pass to Alisa Verzosa who nailed down the 7-1 victory with her second goal of the season.
