HUDSON COUNTY — Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer, Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner, and Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli said they would hold a joint press conference Wednesday afternoon to discuss the introduced Hudson County budget.
Those three towns are expected to get a hike in their county taxes because of the budget, which was introduced this week.
Taxpayers pay to three entities: The county, the city, and the schools. Each budget it determined separately. The county budget is struck each May or June.
Secaucus, Hoboken, and Weehawken saw an increase in the amount of development (and thus, taxpaying properties) this year, and will have to pay a larger share of the county tax levy. The other towns lost value.
As it was, the introduction of the budget was held off as freeholders from the towns facing a tax increase tried to lower the amount.
The press conference will take place in Hoboken City Hall at 1:30 p.m.
For more than a decade, mayors and council people in Hoboken have complained that the county doesn’t do enough in Hoboken to earn such high taxes, but little has changed. Generally the protests are heard around budget time, and then are not heard again until the next budget is introduced.
