Uh oh: Weehawken, Hoboken, Secaucus may suffer most from new county budget

HUDSON COUNTY — Your property taxes are made up of city taxes, school taxes, and county taxes – the last of which will depend on a $304 million budget that was set to be introduced by the county freeholder board Tuesday.
This year, Weehawken, Hoboken, Secaucus, and East Newark will see an increase in their share of the county tax burden while the remaining municipalities in Hudson County will see a slight decline. Because of a state formula, the communities that have seen a significant increase in development have to pay a larger share of the county burden.
Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise presented the 2013 fiscal year budget at a Monday, May 6 freeholder caucus, saying that declining overall property values caused most of the nearly $8 million increase from the 2012 budget.
A public hearing will be held on June 11 at 6 p.m. to allow the general public to make recommendations before a final vote is held.
