Russo, Pereira lift Knights toward gold

Once tournament time rolls around for the Jewish Community Center of Bayonne’s Indoor Soccer Jr. Division, the wins and losses are put on the back burner as each team has a shot at capturing the gold medal. Coming in with a (2-5-1) record, the Wizards are well matched with the (2-6) Knights as they meet with the winner facing the Dragons for the Championship. The Wizards zipped out to a quick 1-0 lead as T. J. Wolf assisted Kyle O’Hara on his ninth goal of the season. The lead was short lived as Chris Ballance fought the ball to Giovanni Russo who put the Knights on the board making it 1 all. Moments later, Russo advanced the Knights cause by notching his second goal off an assist from team captain, Steven Pereira. Trailing 2-1, the Wizards rallied to make it 3-2 as T. J. Wolf blasted in two goals with Matt Miceli and Danny Reyes assisting. With plenty of time remaining, the Knights stayed the course as Andrew Sprague, Harsh Easwar, and Da’Mien Taylor tightened up the Knights’ defensive flanks. With that job done, the Knights’ offense advanced as Steven Pereira (2), and Harsh Easwar (1) went on a three- goal surge giving the Knights a 5-3 lead. Assisting on the three goals were Joyce Gabrael, Steven Pereira, and Harsh Easwar. Down by two goals the Wizards ramped things up with Nate Cintron, Michael Egan, and Victor Mendolaro seeing action in the offensive mix which helped to set up Kyle O’Hara’s zipline pass to T. J. Wolf who made it 5-4 with his third goal of the bout. For the last five minutes, the Wizards pounded away with shots on net but goalie Chris Ballance and his Knights held on for a 5-4 victory and a spot in the “gold-medal round. After a great effort, the Wizards came away with this year’s bronze medal.
