Aguilar seals Sonics’ win

The Jewish Community Center of Bayonne’s Indoor Soccer Senior Division playoff picture was etched in stone with the Rockets (3-2-1) seizing a berth in the championship round, while the Comets (3-4) would wrap up their regular season as foes and meet them again in the next week’s playoff round. The tune-up bout got out to a roaring start for the Comets as Allen McComb blasted a left-footed laser to net in the opening seconds. Assisting on the goal was James Bajor, who leads the league with seven assists on the season. The sudden setback caught the Sonics off-guard, but they soon regrouped as Brandon Ferreira assisted Chloe Gregory on a game-tying bullet. With the game knotted at one-all, the Sonics turned a three-on-one fast break into a goal as Shashwat Punjani assisted Kevin Aguilar on a scoring shot to make it 2-1, Sonics. Giving the Sonics little time to enjoy their slim lead, the Comets fired back as Alexandro Gonzalez notched his 13th goal of the season on an unassisted scorcher. As both teams went toe-to-toe, the Comets’ defense began to step up as Joshua Verzosa, Drew Radil, Natallyah Teixeira, Michael Lago, and Elliott Santana split shifts manning the defensive ranks. The fray seemed destined for overtime until the Sonics’ James Johnson battled the ball up court to Chloe Gregory, who wisely centered a pass to Shashwat Punjani. Punjani registered his 10th goal of the season, giving the Sonics a 3-2 advantage. With time running out, the Sonics nailed down their 4-2 victory when Kevin Aguilar sky-rocketed a net-to-net goal to end the bout.
The Senior Division Players of the Week for week six were: Offensive Player of the Week – Kevin Aguilar, Sonics; Defensive Player of the Week – Chris Shaw, Rockets; Teamwork/Leadership Player of the Week – Meghann Mock, Rockets.
