Scores of Weehawken kids and their families turned out to Louisa Park last Saturday to participate in the township’s 35th annual Easter Egg Hunt. One of the township Recreation Department’s largest (and most chaotic) events of the year, eggs were hidden throughout the park’s playground and each child received a large chocolate bunny upon discovering one of the hidden treasures.
Twins Sophia and Sadie Thompson, age 4, managed to blurt out a few words between mouthfuls of chocolate.
“I liked when I got the egg, because then I got the chocolate,” said Sophia.
“I loved meeting the Easter Bunny,” said Sadie, who had just had her picture taken with one of several bunnies hopping around the playground. (A township government source revealed that the bunnies were in fact peer leadership students from Weehawken High School… but shhh…)
Hector Murillo, 8, admitted he was a little old for the hunt himself, but said he enjoyed assisting his brother Benjamin, 3.
“It was fun,” he said. “I like seeing how happy this little guy is.” He gestured at Benjamin, who, like the Thompson twins, was fixated on his chocolate.
Even the adults were enjoying themselves.
“I had a great time,” said Lamar Lewis, who hunted with his daughter Jordan, 4, and son Evan, 2. “We came last year and there were way more people this year.”
Tom Cheplic, one of the township’s volunteer first aid squad members, said that attending the hunt as an adult rolled back the years to his own Weehawken childhood.
“I remember going to this thing as a kid,” he said. “There were real eggs then, though.”
