Culhane named WNY Irish Resident of the Year
West New York Police Captain James Patrick Culhane was proclaimed the town’s Irish Resident of the Year by Mayor Felix Roque in a ceremony on March 20. Culhane, a West New York resident since 1959, was one of ten children raised by Robert William and Kathleen “Kitty” Culhane. Culhane’s family immigrated to New Jersey from Counties Clare and County Tipperary in Ireland. He attended St. Joseph’s Grammar School in town and joined the police force in 1984.
WNY advocacy group plans community fair
The Dvine Konektion Community Development Corporation is offering a free Community Fair on Saturday, April 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 5516 Jefferson St. in West New York, NJ. Cuban Lions and Palisades Medical holding free health fair in WNY
The West New York Cuban Lions Club has teamed up with Palisades Medical Center to offer a free health clinic and information fair on Sunday, April 7 at the Lions’ new community room located at 514 52nd Street in West New York (between Bergenline Ave. and Kennedy Blvd.) It will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Physicians will be available to answer questions and provide health tests and screenings on the following: blood pressure, cholesterol, dental, diabetes, sleep disorder information, eye/vision information, and glaucoma.
Rug store to go out of business
Overstock Rugs, a 10,000 square foot warehouse located at 20 Wood Avenue in Secaucus, is holding a huge “Going Out of Business Forever Sale” starting March 28. Due to challenging economic conditions, the store will close its doors and must sell off all its remaining thousands of decorative and antique Oriental rugs. Disaster recovery group to sponsor Red Cross readiness group
SERVPRO, a disaster recovery and cleanup company based in Hoboken that has additional offices in Union City, signed on as a national sponsor of the American Red Cross Ready Rating program, it was announced this week. The program, a free, self-guided tutorial for businesses, organizations and schools become better prepared for emergencies, according to Lance Harvey, owner of SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City in Hoboken.
“This partnership just makes perfect sense,” said Harvey, “and truly completes the readiness equation for businesses and other property owners in the Hoboken area. The American Red Cross Ready Rating Program allows individuals to assess their readiness for a disaster, so they can take all necessary steps before disaster strikes to protect their property from damage and loss.
