Celebrating Palm Sunday and Good Friday
On Sunday, March 24 from 8 and 10 a.m. the Church of the Good Shepherd located at 1576 Palisade Ave, Fort Lee will celebrate Palm Sunday. Also on Good Friday, March 29 there will be a Stations of the Earth Outdoor Procession and cleanup where everyone will meet at noon at the church. If there is inclement weather the procession will be moved indoors. For Good Friday the church will have a Prayerbook Liturgy at 7:30 p.m.
Guttenberg to honor young achievers at Council meeting
Mayor Gerald Drasheff and the Town Council of Guttenberg will recognize the accomplishments of young residents on Monday, March 25 at the council meeting.
Guttenberg resident Anthony Giraldo will be acknowledged by the mayor and council for his achievement in winning the NJ State Wrestling championship in the 126 lb. class. Anthony, a Guttenberg resident, is a graduate of Anna L. Klein School. He currently attends the Hudson County Schools of Technology and competes as a member of the North Bergen High School wrestling team.
Also at the meeting, members of the Anna L. Klein School Student Council will serve in the roles as mayor and various council members as part of the town’s annual student government day. The students attended the March caucus meeting and also spent a day at Town Hall learning about the various town departments. The highlight of the program will be the March council meeting, where the students will sit with their governing body counterpart as they conduct the monthly council meeting. The meeting will take place at 8 p.m. at the Guttenberg Town Hall, which is located at 6806 Park Ave.
Candlelight memorial in honor of Omar Monroig
In remembrance of Omar Monroig, a local man who was killed by a hit-and-run driver a year ago, family and friends are invited to join together to share memories of him as well as mark the one year anniversary of his passing. His family is strongly urging support to continue to raise awareness for the injustice in that the perpetrator has not been found. All are welcome to share a story, a prayer and any photos they may have of Omar. The family also asks if anyone owns a “Team Omar” shirt to wear it in honor of him. The memorial will take place on Saturday, March 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at 5117 Tonnelle Ave. in the North Bergen parking lot. The memorial will begin with a prayer lead by the family pastor and they will attempt to provide a candle for all who attend. The North Bergen Police Department will be on site for safety.
Free concert in Weehawken slated for Wednesday afternoon
The Hudson River Performing Art Center will welcome the Brooklyn-based band Roosevelt Dime as the latest performer in its UBS Atrium Series, a season-long smattering of lunchtime concerts which take place at 12:30 p.m. in the atrium of the UBS building, located at 1000 Harbor Blvd.
Roosevelt Dime brings a unique sound rooted in New Orleans-style soul and Mississippi River-style jug band blues mixed to the series, which recently hosted a Spanish bagpipe band and a classical jazz trio before that.
The band’s nontraditional lineup – consisting of banjo, electric and washtub basses, percussion, trumpet and woodwinds – and seamless mixture of musical genres has been described as “a perpetual crowd-pleaser” by The New York Times.
Roosevelt Dime has been featured at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, Musikfest, the Bergen PAC, and the Bowery Ballroom, amongst other venues.
