13th annual Taste of Weehawken to benefit township’s Sandy victims
Weehawken’s tastiest day of the year, the local library’s annual Taste of Weehawken event, is working a little differently this year. Proceeds from the event, which have historically been used to support library programming, will instead be donated by the library to the Weehawken & You Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund, it was announced last week.
The event will take place Tuesday, April 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Food Court at Lincoln Harbor.
“For so many years, in good times and bad, this amazing community has rallied to support not only the Taste, but the library itself,” said Leona Nersesian, the president of the library’s board of trustees. “In the wake of this terrible disaster, we wanted the library to give back to those neighbors and friends in their time of need who have supported us for so long.”
Nersesian noted that the support of the Weehawken community, especially local business owners who participate in the event, have helped make Weehawken’s library one of the best in the state.
“We are confident they will do the same this year for our community members in need,” she added.
Hundreds of food enthusiasts gather at the Taste for an evening of food, fun, and fundraising. The Taste has something for everyone: samplings of signature dishes and unique fare from high profile and emerging local restaurants, caterers, bakers, along with fine wines, and mouthwatering desserts. Giannone Wine will once again be hosting wine tasting.

Upcoming HRPAC concert slated for March 27
The Hudson River Performing Art Center will welcome the Brooklyn-based band Roosevelt Dime as the latest performer in its UBS Atrium Series, a season-long smattering of lunchtime concerts which take place at 12:30 p.m. in the atrium of the UBS building, located at 1000 Harbor Blvd.
Roosevelt Dime brings a unique sound rooted in New Orleans-style soul and Mississippi River-style jug band blues mixed to the series, which recently hosted a Spanish bagpipe band and a classical jazz trio before that.
The band’s nontraditional lineup – consisting of banjo, electric and washtub basses, percussion, trumpet and woodwinds – and seamless mixture of musical genres has been described as “a perpetual crowd-pleaser” by The New York Times.
Roosevelt Dime has been featured at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, Musikfest, the Bergen PAC, and the Bowery Ballroom, amongst other venues.

Women’s Club of Weehawken schedules next meeting
The Woman’s Club of Weehawken will hold their next meeting on Monday, March 18, at 7:15 p.m. in the Senior Nutrition Center, located at 201 Highwood Ave. Join them and find out about the group’s upcoming plans and interests. Recreation announces girl’s softball tryout schedule
The Weehawken Babe Ruth Softball League will hold registration and tryouts starting on Monday, March 18 for various age groups. Players moving up to a higher division must try out again to be selected for their new team. All tryouts will take place in the Webster School gymnasium, located at 2700 Palisade Ave., from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Age divisions will try out on the following days (age is determined by the player’s age as of Dec. 31, 2012): 16 and under on Monday, March 18, 12 and under on Tuesday, March 19, and 10 and under on Wednesday, March 20.
Only Weehawken residents are welcome to participate. A birth certificate and proof of residency required. Candidates must wear sneakers and bring a baseball glove. The league is sponsored by Mayor Richard Turner and the Township Council.

Hudson County CASA hosting wine tasting on March 22
Hudson County CASA (court appointed special advocates), an organization in which volunteers help provide advocacy and legal assistance to nearly 1,000 foster children throughout Hudson County, will host a wine tasting in the atrium of Jersey City’s Harborside Financial Center on March 22 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The fundraiser is being thrown with the help of The Wine Library of Springfield, which has hand-chosen a diverse group of 90 wines for tasting. Food and dessert will also be provided. In addition to the tasting, there will be a cork pull, a silent auction and free parking. All proceeds will go toward Hudson County CASA.

Join the ‘Home Team’ for the 27th annual Lincoln Tunnel Challenge
For the 27th consecutive year, Weehawken will host one of the Special Olympics of New Jersey’s largest annual fundraisers, the Lincoln Tunnel Challenge, which gives thousands of people the chance to run or walk through the Lincoln Tunnel to benefit charity.
The challenge, which is technically a 5K, will be held this year on Sunday, April 28.
As the event’s host, the Weehawken Recreation Department tries each year to put together a strong “Home Team” of township residents participating in the challenge, and 2013 is no exception.

Hoboken pizza store employee missing since March 6
Police are searching for Marco Bruno Garcia, 34, from North Bergen. A missing person poster is hanging in Mario’s Pizza on Eighth Street in Hoboken, where Garcia works.
North Bergen Police Sgt. Bronson Justino said Wednesday that before he disappeared, Garcia had been discussing with his family that he wanted to go back to Mexico, where he is from. However, Justino said that no one from his family in Mexico has heard from him.
“Now they’re trying to figure out where he is, because he left his cell phone, his passport and another type of ID,” said Justino. “It didn’t look like he packed up and left.”
Garcia was last seen on March 6.
