This writer was proud to participate in the recent rally in Lincoln Park organized by the New Jersey Chapter of One Million Moms For Gun Control and Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy. It is noted that Mayor Healy was one of the founders of the Mayors Against Guns that was organized several years ago in
Hudson County. Healy also sponsored a number of gun buy back programs which has resulted in the removal of weapons from the streets of Jersey City.
Many of our state and local officials attended the event and to echo the sentiments of County Executive Thomas DeGise, State Senator Sandra Bolden Cunningham and Bayonne Mayor Mark Smith that the time for action is now and it is not the time for merely blue ribbon panels or groups to study the issues.
We need to petition our federal legislators to stand behind President Barack Obama and support legislation introduced by our United States Senators Frank Lautenberg and Bob Menendez. Assault weapons, machine guns with military like characteristics, high capacity magazines belong solely in the control of our military and law enforcement personnel. Also enhance and increase the resources of the Division of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) to investigate and prosecute sales of illegal weapons.
Let us all join the One Million Moms For Gun Control now and on a continual basis for sensible gun laws in our country.
